Lie of the Land is a work with a melancholic beauty embedded in its bones. Two bombshells paired with ferns take on new life as planter boxes. Phothyzan draws on the reality for those living in his homeland of Laos, where live bombs from American air strikes in the 1960s and 70s are still an ever present force. Mixing a sense of threat with the hope of growth, the work showcases the potential that is possible when plants and people interact in multi-species relationships. The plants here acknowledge the history of human conflict, while helping to begin a process of regeneration.
