Katie WEST
One square metre, 2018

Earth, leaf litter and native grasses, dimensions vary

For the duration of its exhibition in a gallery, One square metre plays an active role in decolonising these traditionally Eurocentric spaces. West, a Yindjibarndi woman, creates work closely connected to the land that she lives and work on. When plants do not feature directly, they are used as dye-stuffs to colour the fabrics that permeate her practice. This piece, consisting of one square metre of undergrowth from the Australian bush populated with native grasses, works to establish traditional connections to Country, bringing the outside indoors, thus destabilising accepted ways of knowing and being.
