Created for display in the Imaginarium / a Voyage of Big Ideas show at the Singapore Art Museum, Trees by Japanese artist Takashi Kuribayashi is in direct conversation with the way nature is boxed in and controlled in modern cities, here examining Singapore’s specific relationship with the environment. Literally re-membering a tree that had been felled to make way for development, Kuribayashi segments the form into clear glass boxes, which are hung to resemble a complete tree. At once a memorial to the human drive to control the natural world, and a celebration of nature itself, the work is designed to create tiny ecosystems that will live on even as the original tree decays.
