Naturally dyed cotton yarn and digital photograph on cotton paper, 86 x 140 cm

Constructed from photos and plant dyed fibres, Ana Teresa Barboza’s work speaks to a deep interconnectedness between the land and traditional crafts. This is reinforced by both the materials, with the Peruvian artist sourcing yarn dyed by communities near the location of the images, and in the visual forms. Twist consists of a split image of a tree, the gap bridged by weaving that suggests the missing forms, tendrils of loose fibre hanging from the picture plane like roots. Created on a loom, the work references the role of weaving as a tool to speak about stories, lives (both human and non-human) and histories, and women’s traditional connection with both craft practices and the landscape.
